Pastor Gavin van Heerden and his wife, Val, started Linkway Church in October 1994 in their home with three other families. During the next three months they met regularly, Pastor Gavin shared the vision God had given him for the church, and together they discussed the philosophy of ministry as they prayerfully sought after God’s leading and vision.
During January of 1995 the group grew enough that by the end of February a suitable hall had to be found to meet in. God provided a hall at the Joe Simon Pre-Primary in Monte Vista and on 5 March 1995, they had their first morning service. God’s favour rested on Linkway Church and in July 1995, they constituted as a fellowship with the Western Province Baptist Association as the Tygerberg Baptist Fellowship.
The growth continued and in July of 1996 they Constituted as a Church with the Baptist Union of Southern Africa as the Monte Vista Baptist Church. They officially took 58 people into membership at this meeting. Numbers continued to be added with many giving their lives to Jesus for the first time and being baptised.
Soon they outgrew the hall that was being used and on approaching the Edgemead High School for accommodation, they made their library hall available for the church. Within a year, the library hall was also too small to accommodate all the people. Dr Venter, the school principal at the time, then graciously made a bigger hall, the Hayward Centre, available.
During this time, they investigated the possibility of purchasing property. After much prayer, and the Holy Spirit’s direction, God provided a plot of ground in Edgemead. Due to the location of the property, it was logical (and necessary) to change the name of the church. After receiving suggestions from the congregation and discussing each suggestion at a special meeting, the name Linkway Church was chosen.
In October of 2000, Val (Pastor Gavin’s wife), was called as a Pastoral Assistant to assist with the office administration and counselling. This appointment was of great benefit to the church and freed the Pastor of the much of the administration duties but was a big step of faith, as the budget could not facilitate another staff member - but God provided graciously! This was yet another testimony of God’s faithfulness.
On the 10th February of 2002, after the morning service, a group of people gathered on the plot to pray and commit all the building plans to the Lord.
That next week construction of the church building was started. The building took the next 9 months to complete, with much of the finishing touches being done by the members of the church. This was a wonderful time of camaraderie and fellowship.
God’s financial provision was tremendous and He always provided just in time. They had their opening service on 26 October 2002. This was a great time of celebration as they together, with friends and family, celebrated the goodness of the Lord.
God continued to bless and grow the church and in January of 2004, Linkway called a full time youth pastor, Bret Bevan. He had joined the church as a partner in 2000 after having relocated from Durban to study at the Cape Town Baptist Seminary.
In March 2008, at God’s leading, Linkway called Allan van Heerden as a full time worship pastor, who had already been leading the worship team for many years. The church easily recognised God’s call on Allan’s life and anointing on his ministry. Under Pastor Allan’s direction, the worship team released Linkway’s first praise and worship album, Reign In Me, in 2008.
In March 2009, Linkway Church extended their building in order to accommodate their tremendous growth in youth and children’s ministry. This was a great provision from God as the building was erected with minimal debt. The building was completed and opened in November 2009.
In February 2010, Linkway Church launched a new outreach ministry in the form of a coffee shop called the Link Café. All profits from this ministry are given towards missions and ministry extension in the form of building an old age home, crèche or even primary school – depending on which opportunity Jesus leads the church into.
In June 2010, Bret Bevan - Linkway's Youth Pastor - took a calling to another church in Table View. Linkway then started to pray and seek the Lord's face in the appointment of another pastor to join the team in leading the youth ministry. In November 2010, the Lord led Linkway in calling André de Jager as Youth Pastor. The Lord has truly anointed and gifted Andre in his ministry to the young people of our community, who rounds out the pastoral team consisting of Linkway’s three pastors in addition to the pastoral assistant.
There are many things that Jesus is still leading us into as a church, including the final phase of building (a 700-seater auditorium and added children’s facilities), more praise and worship albums, numerous church plants, the opening of community facilities and the growing of the staff contingent. All of this is to advance the Kingdom of Jesus so that more people will come to meet Him and worship Him alone as God and Saviour, experiencing the extravagant love that He has for us.
